CGI programs are scripts or executables that run on the web server to generate dynamic content and serve it back to the client. When a request targets a CGI resource, the server launches the program, passes request information through environment variables and standard input, and the program outputs an HTTP header followed by the page content to standard output. This is the mechanism by which the server interfaces with external programs to create WWW pages. It’s not a client-side script that runs in the browser, not the HTTP protocol itself, and not a data compression technique.
